Jonker Street – the centre street of Chinatown

Being the main attraction of Malacca, Jonker Street definitely have a lot to offer during its day and night. Located centrally in Malacca and in front of Malacca River, Jonker Street has become the hub of local Chinese community, especially businessman and traders there. 

Below are compilation on the quintessentially, on what to see and eat at Jonker Street…

1. Best Chicken Rice Ball!!

Don’t be surprised with the long queue in front of Zhong Hwa Chicken Rice Ball Restaurant at 7.30am as this is a common phenomenon especially during the weekend..

The minced well and rice and melt nicely under your tongue shall give u an unbeatable experience that you shall fell in love with it! Just the chicken slices are in a big plate portion that you might be too full to able to finish it~ But dipped with its chili sauce, it tastes good~

2. Night market

One of the attractions of Jonker Street is its night market that starting on Friday and the weekend. Starting from Jalan Hang Jebat, 

the hawkers manage to bring the street life alive and attracted not only tourists as well as local residents to explore. Other than keep sacks and knick-knacks, you could find snacks and local food products selling along the pedestrian mall.

3. All about Nyonya 

Being in love with Nyonya culture? At Jonker Street, you could begin your Peranakan heritage trail, starting with Nyonya dining at one if its Nyonya restaurant, followed by stay at its unique heritage-styled hotel (The Baba House and Hotel Puri) and a visit to Baba-Nyonya Heritage Museum. A plus point is all of them are within walking distance and located along the Jonker Street.

4. Geographer Cafe

Good food is always to be on top of the list when come to recommendation. And you MUST pay a visit to this long-standing shop for its thumbs-up cuisine experience. Being restaurant over the day and bar resturant at night, the cafe always crowded during the weekend as the foods served are delicate and value-for-money! With its Chinese and Dutch heritage ambiance, it also attracted not only local tourists, but foreigners as well. You could even found its self-designed postcard available for sale inside the restaurant!

If you are a knick-knack lover, you could find assorted type of knick-knacks at the shop just beside 三叔公.

It really sad to learn that this idyllic street will be closing soon due to government decision on the proclaimed excuse that the traffic jam it has caused. The arouse caused among the local traders caught nation attention but sincerely, we hope this tourist attraction will not be closed upon its opening from 13 years ago.
